Climate change could be cause for celebration at UK holiday hotspots
The Guardian reported that the Mediterranean is beginning to lose its one unique asset - endless heat. While the region becomes unbearably hot, holidaymakers are instead heading for beaches in Southern England, Wales and even the Irish Republic.
Researchers at Hamburg University have predicted that tourism demand will shift towards locations further north than those traditionally favoured by tourists, while some will turn to high altitude destinations for their holidays.
As a result, countries such as Greece, Spain and Italy, as well as the Caribbean islands, could lose out from global warming - with holiday makers instead heading for the Baltic coast, the Alps and even Sweden. Even unfashionable destinations in the UK, such as Skegness, could get a boost from the higher temperatures.
Richard Tol from Hamburg University said that the changes will have a significant effect on domestic tourism: "More people will stay in their home country, particularly Germans and Brits".
Germans and Brits are the first and third most travelled nations in the EU respectively.
