Jousting in Brussels' famous square

Jousting in Brussels' famous square
Fans of medieval spectacles may like to check out a jousting event which takes place in Brussels each July.

For two days in the summer month, the Belgian city's Grand Place is dressed up as a fortress and a prime location for jousting knights.

Crossbowers give the starting signal before a blast from the trumpeters is sounded, according to Whatsonwhen.

Carrying a crossbow from his district, each knight then takes an oath to the clerical hierarchy before the fighting commences.

Belgians will also take to the streets in July with their black, yellow and red flags for an annual event which celebrates the forming of the independent state of Belgium on July 21st, 1831.

The date saw the election of King Leopold of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

Street festivals, music and a spectacular firework display in front of the Royal
Palace are expected on the day.

Walking cobbled streets is an alternative favourite pass times for visitors in Brussels.
