Showing muscles in Scotland

Showing muscles in Scotland
If a show of strength and sporting attractions are what you like to see, then a trip to Aberdeen or the surrounding area during the warmer months may be worthwhile.

For over the summer period a number of towns and villages, as well as the city of Aberdeen itself, hold their own Highland Games.

Running from June until September, the events test the strength and power of some true highlanders. Whether the event be log hurling, hammer throwing or tug'o'war, the games can provide a show of strength well worth seeing.

Besides the strong-man contests a number of more calm events take place at the games too, including Highland dancing, with music coming from the traditional Scottish bagpipes.

One of the most famous of all Highland Games contests is the Braemar Gathering, held in the Aberdeenshire village of Breamar. With the Queen as patron these games, held on the first Saturday of every September, these games always have a royal presence.

But for those that would rather stay in the city, the overwhelming presence of granite in Aberdeen's architecture gives the buildings an interesting shine.
