English visitor attractions cost less than £5 on average, according to a new survey by national travel agency Visit Britain.

The survey found that out of 2,111 attractions in England, a third are free. Blackpool Pleasure Beach is the country's most popular free attraction, bringing in six million punters a year, with the British Museum coming in second with 4.6 million

Art galleries and museums continue to give good value for "money" to tourists, with 53 per cent of venues free to all. The majority of heritage and visitor centres also provided free entry.

"Our research shows that Britons take 111 million trips in this country - well ahead of the 66.5 million they take abroad," said Michael Bedingfield, VisitBritain's marketing director.

"I'm delighted by these results which prove that you don't have to spend a fortune to get out and enjoy England."

Other popular free attractions include the Liverpool Museum and Brighton Pier, attracting 515,855 and 4.5 million visitors respectively. England's most popular paid attraction was the London Eye, bringing in 3.3 million visitors, followed by the Tower of London.
