The River Thames is to set the scene for the annual Mayor's Thames Festival, with a wide range of activities and shows on offer for families.

Taking place on September 16th and 17th, the festival will host funfairs, fireworks, parades, live music, contemporary art, a circus and a huge lantern procession.

The latter event is the flag-ship of the festival, taking place on the final evening. The world's best creators of carnival art will descend on the city to help Londoners create giant figures, lanterns and floats for the occasion, which will run across Victoria Embankment to the Royal National Theatre.

Other events include fireworks displays, a riverside bazaar, a food and croft market, environmental activities and much more.

Adrian Evans, director of the festival, said that there was much for Londoners and others to take part in.

"Thames Festival celebrates London's greatest natural asset, the River Thames, with a jam-packed weekend that's focused on public participation – whether it's getting down onto the Thames beach, singing or dancing, making flowers for our communal sculpture or expressing your views about the Thames and its future," he said.
