Fiesta La Merce offers a great family day out
A world of Catalan popular culture awaits travellers at the Fiesta La Merce in Barcelona this year.

The festival, which takes place during September, features an array of events sourced from Catalan culture and mythology, mixing the modern with the traditional. At the Fiesta La Merce, parades of dragons, devils and eagles sit comfortably with DJs and big name bands.

Taking place in the last week of the month, the festival attracts huge crowds to the Plaça St Jaume, where castellers dressed in blue and red attempt to build the largest human tower possible - as high as seven or eight people.

Major events include the Carrefoc - a midnight parade featuring an array of mythical characters including devils and dragons. Other centres around Barcleona feature events as wide in variety as street theatre, performance dance, circus acts and even a kite display.

For cultured travellers, the Fiesta La Merce offers it all this late summer.
