Athens marathon due to take place
The Greek city of Athens is to hold arguably the original marathon in coming weeks.

While many cities have an annual run, the one to be hosted in the city on November 4th marks the historical 42-kilometre sprint undertaken by Pheidippides in 490BC.

Participants must be over 18 to take part and for those wishing to participate who do not think they are up to covering the whole distance, there are ten km and five km races available.

Beginning in the town of Marathon itself, the course ends at the Panathenaic Stadium after taking in sites such as Halandri, Stavros and Pallini.

Registration for the event closed on October 27th, but applications can still be submitted to the Athens Classic Marathon office until November 1st or the Olympic Fencing Hall at Hellinikon on November 2nd and 3rd.

Greek legend states that Pheidippides ran from Marathon to Athens to deliver the news of the Greek defeat of the Persians. Upon arrival he shouted "Victory!" before promptly dying.
