Colosseum, Rome
Colosseum in Rome holds tourist delights.
For a colossal break in Rome, tourists could be well advised to stop off at the Italian capital's Colosseum.
The building, which was once used as an amphitheatre for watching gladiator contests and public events in the Ancient Roman period, is now in a partially ruined state but still attracts thousands of visitors from across the world.
Meanwhile, the Colosseum is often used by the Roman Catholic church for various ceremonies, with the Pope leading a torchlit procession to the ruins every Good Friday.
In addition the attraction has also played host to a number of more modern events and exhibitions in the past including a performance by former Beatle Paul McCartney.
The Colosseum also features a museum dedicated to Eros - the god of love.
Meanwhile, tourists wanting a further taste of Ancient Rome may wish to visit the nearby Arch of Constantine.
