Ghent Festivities, Belgium
Ghent's grand festival.
For a great time in Ghent, visitors should check out the Belgian city's annual festivities.
Taking place every July, the ten-day event provides a host of street theatre acts, guided tours and musical performances.
However, tourists should be aware that the Gentse Feesten (Ghent Festivities) is a slightly misleading title for this cultural bonanza, as it actually incorporates four international festivals into one.
Jazz cats should look to check out the Blue Note Records festival, which takes place at the Bijloke music venue and has in the past played host to acts such as the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra, Elvis Costello and Sly and the Family Stone.
However, those preferring house and dance music may find the 10 Days Off event is more catered toward their tastes as over 100 DJs and live acts perform from the Vooruit Arts Centre.
Meanwhile, the International Street Theatre Festival sees a variety of open-air theatrical showcases take place.
The festivities are rounded off by the International Puppet Busker Festival, with families on a break in the Belgian city also getting the chance to witness firework displays and attend a circus at Zuidpark.
Although much of the event is free, with organisers claiming it is Europe's largest cultural festival tourists may wish to get down to Ghent as soon as possible to avoid the queues.
However, those looking for a slightly more relaxed break in the city may wish to pay a visit to the Museum of Fine Arts.
