Historical Lisbon
History is in the water in Lisbon.
Sat on seven hills right next to the coast, Lisbon is an ideal destination for the culturally minded as well as the beach bums.
The Portuguese capital is steeped in history with some fabulous Moorish history still visible in the Alfama part of town.
During the 16th century Lisbon was the commercial hub for both east and west, with spices, sugar and textiles all passing through the city which was at the heart of the then-strong Portuguese empire.
All of this has left a city with a part of town, the Baixa, that is in the running for becoming a Unesco World Heritage site for its grid-like layout and two squares.
The Belem tower, just a short journey out of the city, is also an interesting site and is protected by its Unesco World Heritage status.
Built in a late-Gothic style of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, the tower was the original gateway to the city from the sea.
But if history isn't your thing, the endless cafes and the laidback lifestyle are sure to please.
