More opt for holidays in Britain
The tourist delights of Britain are being enjoyed by more and more overseas visitors, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics.

Visits by overseas residents to the UK rose by five per cent during the 12 months ending July 2006, from 29.5 million to 31 million.

Americans seem to be particularly keen to experience the UK's tourist hotspots with 4.5 million visiting from the USA, an increase of seven per cent.

Visits by western Europeans were up four per cent to 19.8 million.

It seems the British love affair with travel also shows no sign of cooling with more than 67.7 million trips abroad made by UK residents in the 12 months, an increase of three per cent and on average more than a holiday per person for everyone in the country.

Visitors from abroad also brought their wallets. Spending by foreign tourists increased three per cent to £3.9 billion.
