Late nights and high culture in Madrid
The Spanish capital offers everything from traditional tapas bars to bustling contemporary restaurants and quiet street-side cafes to buzzing night clubs and is both a place of great art and extravagant architecture and progressive, cosmopolitan living.
Madrid is a modern financial centre and the political heart of Spain, yet while its infrastructure reflects this most of its architecture does not - and the city has managed to preserve much of its cultural and artistic heritage.
Major landmarks such as the Plaza Mayor, the Gran Via and the Palacio Real de Madrid, as well as museums and art galleries such as the Reina Sofia Museum where Pablo Picasso's Guernica hangs, are interspersed with designer shops and busy restaurants, bringing Madrid into the 21st century whilst keeping it firmly rooted in the past.
The city is renowned for its night life and the locals are just as enthusiastic about dancing and drinking the night away as the tourists. There is an abundance of bars and clubs to choose from and something to suit all tastes.
When the morning comes nighttime revellers can take in the cultural sights once more or enjoy a relaxing walks in one of Madrid's large, well manicured parks and gardens. Take your pick because it is all available in Madrid.
